My 15-year-old daughter is suffering from Candida. We have tried absolutely every conventional product and the problem goes away for a few weeks and then returns again. She stays off sugar and all grains and must be so uncomfortable. Please do you have any natural suggestions that may cure this problem and prevent it from ever bothering her again? E.G.
Dr DEREK JOHNSON replies for the College of Natural Health: I am going to assume that this condition (candidiasis) has been diagnosed as Candida albicans.
First I need to explain that Candida albicans occurs naturally in the gut and intestine. What your daughter is experiencing is the very uncomfortable and sometimes embarrassing uncontrolled overgrowth of this fungus (known as a diploid fungus). This is an immune compromise and is always found in people whose bodies are out of balance for whatever reason. A few examples could be stress, hormonal changes, diet, and excessive exercise.
Most certainly there are many reasons for a person trying to live in today’s society to suffer from immune issues!
The key question is – how to deal with this? As always, knowledge is power and we need to find the source of your daughter’s imbalance. A natural health practitioner would consider the following:
■Is her diet correct?
■Is she pushing too hard?
■How does she cope with stress?
■Is she spiritually balanced?
■Does she have healthy relationships at home and at college?
Once you have answered these questions it’s possible to work on an action plan to help resolve the imbalances.
A few common pointers are:
Diet: I would recommend eating foods that nature created, not what man created! Opt for a high-protein, low-carb diet which also includes plenty of greens. This will enable the sugars to be both controlled on input and processed more easily. Choose organic produce to reduce the intake of toxins.
Once all of the above has been taken care of you can focus on the immediate problem.
You may have heard of oregano oil. Well the scientists at Georgetown University have discovered that this oil effectively stops the overgrowth of candida in its tracks!
It's available in capsules or in tincture form. Follow the dosage instruction on the bottle, but the typical dosage in tincture form is three to six drops taken orally twice a day. (It can also be applied topically should it be appropriate.)
In terms of further natural remedies I would recommend the following antimicrobials
Garlic, at least one clove per day (taken as food with meals).
Capsicum (cayenne pepper), one capsule per day.
Full-spectrum probiotics, to restore the balance of good bacteria in the gut, at least fifteen billion per day.
The herb golden seal. Take as recommended by the manufacturer for a maximum of two weeks. This herb must never be taken if there are any hypertensive (high blood pressure) issues and, as with all herbal remedies, should always be taken in conjunction with a qualified natural practitioner’s recommendations.
Please remember that the key to resolving your daughter’s issue is balance!!!
I cannot say this enough and I emphasise that it should always be a person’s first port of call, no matter what the health concern.
