Yoga and wine may come across as an unlikely blend; however – being quite a connoisseur myself, and passionate about both – I must share that pairing wellness with some of life’s enjoyable indulgences has a magical outcome of lightness, happiness and, of course, balance.
At Follow the Sun, we believe in balance and what better balance can there be than with ‘Yoga & Wine’?!Living consciously, implementing healthy habits, focusing on sustainability both in the world and within ourselves, and, of course, having light-hearted fun while doing so, are important elements to living a happy, balanced and radiant life that is full of gratitude and sunshine.
YOGA AND WINE SHARE COMMON TRAITSThere is much synergy between yoga and wine if one is to go a little deeper. Alex Elman writes for Mind Body Green saying, ‘It may surprise you that yoga and wine have quite a bit in common. Yoga is an ancient discipline and wine has a rich history dating back to 6 000 BC. Yogis stretch their muscles both before and after meditation in order to sit motionless for prolonged periods. This is a practice that needs to be developed over time. Like yoga, wine is a practical education – one must keep tasting in order to develop a palate and the ability to discern the flavours and nuances of wine.’
From a historical perspective, we know that wine has been used in various sacred traditions, from Greek Dionysian rites through Buddhist tantra and the Christian Mass. The essence of drinking wine is about truly savouring something that has been produced with care and attention and being mindful of all the love that has been added into cultivating that delicious bottle of heaven. Yoga, in the same way, brings much bliss when practised mindfully.
YOGA IN THE MORNING, COCKTAILS AT NIGHTFollow the Sun first started our concept of ‘yoga in the morning and coconut cocktails at night’ on our Eat, Play, Yoga Journeys to Bali in 2013. Our overseas yoga travel adventures are organised with fun and freedom in mind, with a gentle approach to the ladies discovering their own version of enlightenment and Samadhi or Bliss. We provide tools that can be implemented in daily life, and facilitate the flow of the travel adventures to allow our guests to leave their yoga holiday feeling rejuvenated, refreshed, energised and transformed.
LOCAL ‘YOGA & WINE’ WEEKENDSNow we also facilitate ‘Yoga & Wine’ weekends locally. In South Africa we are blessed to be living in a country that produces award-winning wine and provides an abundance of beautiful, outdoor locations for our yoga sessions! It was therefore inevitable that our ‘Yoga & Wine weekends’ were created, and the balance of yoga and wine tested on our very own soil. Robertson has been our location of choice and it has delivered; in April we will also be experimenting with Tulbagh as a new location. Doing yoga on the lawn in the morning, breathing in the fresh air with a view of mountains, valleys and endless rolling hills, is one way to connect with nature and yourself. Not to worry, we are not drinking any vino yet (some people literally think we are doing yoga with our wine glass in our hands! For the record, yoga comes before the wine.)
The morning is all about yoga, self-reflection, silence, mindfulness and time to relax. Then in the afternoon we are collected in a shuttle van and whisked off to various wine farms to discover the history, the process of love and nurturing that goes into making the wine, and of course tasting the wine itself. The combination creates a really special opportunity to connect with one another and we often find that lasting friendships are sparked during these weekends.
CORPORATE AND GROUP ‘YOGA & WINE’ EXPERIENCESAs we bring our offerings into the corporate market, we’ve created an opportunity to provide this great balance to the corporate world as well! Spier Wine Estate is the perfect location for yoga and wine. If you are looking to do something special for your company team building or celebration, then embrace the sunshine and the beauty of the winelands as you enjoy a real relaxing experience, plus a whole lot of fun! This outing will banish any work stress and refresh and energise your team with a lighthearted, playful yoga session embodying the practices of communication, collaboration and trust. Think interactive games, supported movement and simple balances. We also add in relaxation and breathing techniques that can be used off the mat and implemented into daily life.
This enriching session is followed by a glass of bubbly, wine tasting and lunch at the unique Eight Restaurant, which, like its name, is an expression of balance, cycles, harmony, infinity and abundance. Natural and organic ingredients are creatively combined to create nourishing, healthy, and delicious food and the produce is either grown on the farm or responsibly sourced from nearby farmers. It’s a truly divine experience at a beautiful location, and you don’t need to have a corporate gathering as an excuse to enjoy it. If you have a birthday to celebrate, or a pamper party to arrange, then small groups can also be catered for. Imagine doing yoga in the gardens, with your special ladies, followed by a picnic lunch and ‘Power Thought’ affirmation card session, while you sip on your favourite wine.
CONCLUSIONThe popularity of yoga and wine is growing, so, if you are the kind of person who enjoys a variety of experiences, takes a relaxed and responsible approach to pleasure, and looks forward to the balanced approach in life, we welcome you to join us on one of our ‘Yoga & Wine’ experiences.
In the end, I believe that life shouldn’t be taken too seriously and that moderation is the key to leading a well-balanced life.
Cheers to that!
