We have used our own Boschendal pasture reared chickens and pasture reared eggs to make this month’s Scotch egg recipe – a lighter version of the traditional Scotch egg. The nutrient density of pasture reared eggs is far superior over battery eggs or even free range eggs.
The premium in price of pasture reared is justified if you look at the nutrition table below.
The basic function of any joint is to allow for movement. When joints swell, it’s because fluid has accumulated in the joint. Bleeding in the joints usually follows some form of trauma and micro-trauma can occur due to repeated action of a joint, most frequently the wrist, fingers or elbow.
Because joints contain many pain receptors, swelling is usually painful, at least initially, as the skin over the joint will of course be stretched. The main cause of concern is the onset of limited movement, making everyday activities difficult. Steroids and anti-inflammatories may reduce the symptoms initially, but come with side effects.
The symptoms that accompany IBS (also known as spastic colon or mucous colitis) – constipation, diarrhoea, bloating and flatulence, searing abdominal pain spasms – can throw a monkey spanner into all aspects of the sufferer’s quality of life. Sufferers refer to it as ‘a little monster living inside’ that dominates their whole life, bringing depression and anxiety.1
HOW COMMON IS IT? IBS is very common. As many as one person in six adults in developed countries are afflicted with IBS, and it is apparently the second most common reason people miss work (after the common cold). Twice as many women than men succumb to it.2
Stress can impact heavily on your physical and mental health. Our innate and primeval fight/flight response is stretched to the limit due to today’s relentless modern-day stressors. Ensure your happiness and health by recognising the causes of your stress and implementing ways to rediscover your inner peace.
When stress and anxiety are mentioned to me I have this mental cartoon of a red, distorted face that discharges smoke from its ears and is about to explode. Reality, of course, is quite different because nowadays even a serene face could be hiding a highly stressed person that is just trying to cope with everyday hassles.
‘Let there be work, bread, water and salt for all.’ ~ Nelson Mandela
In some parts of the world salt was used as a unit of currency, such was its worth. Indeed ‘salary’ is derived from the Latin word salarium, which was the sum given to soldiers to buy salt. Animals are given a ‘salt lick’ to promote health and some of us are complimented as ‘salt of the earth’ people. Salt in its natural form doesn’t deserve the bad name it has been given and can actually be used to promote health.
Let’s take a closer look. Naturally occurring salt contains over 60 different minerals, such as magnesium and lithium, with over 98% of salt being sodium chloride. Refined salt, on the other hand, is over 99.9% sodium chloride.
